Vegan Berry Cheesecake

“Do you want dessert?” Looking hopefully at The Husband.

“Nah, I’m good.”

Doh. “You aren’t still hungry?”

“Nope.”

“So you’re full?”

“Full enough.”

Come on, work with me here! “I’ve had enough now… but I might be hungry later…”

I get a partly-amused, partly-long-suffering look. “If you want some dessert, you can order some.”

But I hate eating dessert alone, it makes me feel like a whale… “Will you share it with me?”

He smiles at me. “Sure.” So cute. I love this man!

I wave at the waitress to catch her eye. “Can we have a slice of the vegan berry cheesecake?” She nods from across the room.

She puts the plate down and goes to get us some forks. It’s a conservatively-sized slice. Just as well I’m not that hungry.

The Husband gets right into it. Whoa, hang on! “Let me split it…” Otherwise I’ll get three mouthfulls… I like to take my time with desserts, which doesn’t lend itself to sharing one portion. I divide it in half, leaning in for inspection while he hoes right on in.

A thick light brown biscuit base, a white smooth cake, a deep magenta jelly topping. I was hoping for an actual berry-flavoured cake rather than a bit of stuff on top but let’s give it a chance…

The biscuit base is the best thing about it, even though it’s soft leaning to soggy. It’s oaty and pleasant to roll about the mouth, almost like cake itself.

The jelly topping is so firm it’s almost rubbery. There are a few flecks of berry seeds but not much evidence of actual berries. It tastes like jelly. I like jelly. But I didn’t order jelly.

The cheesecake itself is creamy and almost as silky as mousse, much lighter than a traditional cheesecake. But I miss the richness, the firmness against the tongue… plus it just don’t taste right. It tastes like soy. Which is understandable, since that’s what it is, but it tastes too much like soy. It tastes like soy yoghurt.

I like soy yoghurt. But I didn’t order soy yoghurt.

It looks like a cheesecake, but doesn’t deliver. Just like those other imposter cheesecakes, ricotta cheesecakes. Too gentle, too light, okay, nice, but no rich punch, no real pleasure.

Turns out you can fake meat, but not the magical perfection that is cheesecake. Not with berries, anyway. Perhaps I need to try a chocolate version, the cocoa might outweight the soy… hmmm…
