Rosemary, Sage & Parsley Vegie Sausages

“Have you seen our veggie sausages?”

My sister waves to the packet on the bench. “There. I said they could just chuck them on the barbie for a couple of minutes at the end… right?”

Scanning the package. Rutherford Woolies had a wide range of veggie sausages so we’re trying something new… so do they cook quick like normal? Hmm, no, says 12-15 minutes instead of the regular 5! Better take them out to the cook.

My sister’s father-in-law is poking at beef sausages. I give him the packet and tell him the timeframe.

“Do I need to clean the grill before I put them on?”

Aww, people really are nice to us vegetarians. “Nah, that’s okay, we’re not bothered. It’s not like we’re allergic to meat!”

The woman who is allergic to prawns smiles.

And now it’s time to test them! They’re a pale brown-grey, not as bright red as our usual ones… one hopes that means less fake colouring! The skins have split a bit which is actually encouraging… they have skins, rather than just being a solid tube of whatever it is they actually put in these things…

Cut a slice. It slices easily, the grey speckled with black. Pop it in!

Mmm… it’s much lighter than some of the other ‘gourmet’ faux snags we’ve had. Some are very stodgy, made up of compacted breadcrumbs. This sausage has a slightly springy, rubber-ish texture rather than the dry, choke-it-down variety. I think it comes from the inclusion of tofu in the mix.

The herb flavour is very strong, though it’s more like a muddle of herbs rather than any overriding taste. It’s good.

I eat my two easily, and The Husband enjoys his three in a bun.

There were only five in the pack, and due to the lightness of them perhaps not as filling or as good value as other varieties, but very tasty. It’s unusual for fake meats to be nice alone without having to be doused in sauce or mixed in a dish.

They may very well be the ‘meat’ we bring to our next BBQ… if we can find them again!
