Porridge (with water)

Well, porridge, I’ve had you before as an instant, runny, milky mess and hated you. I’ve had you as a thick, creamy clumping bowl with berries that I enjoyed. And now – providing I can get you down – I will have you as just oats and water and whatever I can to sweeten you for the next thirty mornings.

There’s no way you will be able to overcome a two-weetbix-a-day-for-twenty-five-years habit, but be kind to me, okay?

Sniff. Smells like hot water. Unsurprising. Solid enough to hold its position when piled for a second before slowly oozing back down.

A little sup. The oats are soft and chew for a moment before swallowing. The taste is very bland.

I found sultanas in the cupboard to sprinkle over… okay, pour over… and if one is on the spoon then the sweet taste fills my mouth and the oats are quite fine: just a vehicle to cradle the dried fruit.

If there is no sultana then it tastes… just of a slightly gluey nothing. Every now and then it will be somehow particularly watery and those bits are a bit harder to get down.

I wonder if this is was gruel was like?

Anyway, it’s cheap, healthy and available, so there’s nothing for it to knuckle down to a month – perhaps a life – of it.

Sigh.
