Plum

Most fruits are better dried. Well, at least stone fruits are. I think.

Actually I don’t know when or how I decided I didn’t like plums. It may be that I never actually tried one.

Well, I’ve traded 35cents for one and that seems like a fair price to confirm my opinion.

I saw someone else eating one today and it looked pretty easy. Cut it up and eat it, skin and all.

I try to cut mine up. I cut deep all around the pit and twist the fruit halves apart as you would an avocado but it doesn’t work at all: too soft.

Haphazard slicing it is then.

Now I’ve got a plate of hacked-up plum. The inside is more orange than I’d imagined (prunes are so brown) with a touch of pink. It’s moist but leaves no juice.

I take a bite of flesh only. The taste is quite astringent and even though the fruit is wet it feels like my mouth is instantly dry. A shiver actually travels right down my spine to my toes.

What a ridiculous reaction! I really need to give it a proper go before casting judgement on plums forever more.

A few more bites. Including the skin now which seems as easy as apple skin to get through.

Still that bitterness.

I’ll stick to prunes.

Rating: ★☆☆☆☆

Specifics: plum bought from an independent grocer in Macquarie Fields
