Oporto Vegie Burger

We’re walking to Maccas with friends and I’m looking for a way out. I don’t want a sundae for lunch and that is about all Ronald has to offer a vegetarian who dislikes fries.

“Just let me see if Oporto has a vegie burger.”

They do! Now, is it edible? Nando’s offering consists of the dreaded dehydrated potato, corn and pea frozen disc that I loathe. I squint at the picture. I think I spy a pea. But we are travelling and this is the pit stop. It’s this or go hungry.

The Husband places it in front of me. The bun is too soft and struggling to contain it’s fillings before I’ve taken a bite. Not a good omen.

Big bite. The mayo is delicious, flavoured with lemon. That’s just as well because there is far too much of it and it overruns everything else. The only section of lettuce that Oporto seems to be aware of is the white crunchy end part; not a green leaf in sight.

Finally find a bite with patty… Hey, not too bad! It seems to be a curry-inspired version with breadcrumbs rather than potato. I like it.

Pull off some of the lettuce. By the end the burger is practically disintegrating in my hands but I scoff it up.

I feel like I’ve clogged my arteries with fried grease and a bottle of mayo but I’d do it again.

This is the truth of trashy fast food: if it wasn’t tasty it wouldn’t be popular.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Specifics: vegie burger from Oporto, South Nowra
