Magnum Gold

Crrrk. The sound of a car’s handbrake going on, footsteps on the path. He’s home!

Jumping up to open the door. He comes in, smiling broadly. He kisses me then steps back with a mischievous look. “I have something for you.”

He produces two Magnum ice creams, the new limited edition flavour I was wanting to try the other day. Awww!

More kisses. And into the freezer for the ice cream.

Now, home alone, time to get my tasty treat and be comforted by my husband’s care in his absence!

Tearing open the packaging. Instead of the familiar brown, a dull yellow-orange appears. Not exactly the glittering gold in the advertising, but close enough.

Lick. Tastes like the normal chocolate. Rich with an Easter-egg edge. Maybe it’s dyed chocolate?

Crunch. Ah, no, once I’m biting and getting whole shards into my mouth the gold is actually white chocolate with a caramel flavour.

Now into the ice cream. It’s a bit… icy rather than creamy. The crystals melt quickly against my tongue. A few bites later and the dairy has softened and become properly creamy again.

But it doesn’t taste like much. It should either be rich vanilla like the traditional Magnum or have a new flavour… instead its quite plain and nothing.

The normal chocolate coat is beneath the gold, it’s the only thing with real depth. Crack! One side of the coat cracks the whole way down the middle, like parting a sea. Hope it doesn’t fall apart, I hate losing shards of chocolate to the floor.

Ah, now that I’ve eaten half the ice cream I’ve finally hit some swirls of yellow sauce. I guess it sunk down or something. It tastes of faintly of honeycomb, a bit too sweet against the gold white chocolate layer.

I wish this were a regular Magnum. Stupid advertising gimmick. I guess there’s a reason this is ‘limited edition’, once you’ve bought one you’re not going to buy again.

Of course, nothing can make ice cream and chocolate taste bad! Just not great, like a premium ice cream ought to be.
