Vanilla, strawberry, knickerbocker glory… Vanilla, strawberry, knickerbocker glory… argh, that stupid refrain is in my head again!
Ever since I spotted it on the menu when I tried eton mess I’ve had that little tune stuck in my head. Hopefully actually eating some will kick it right out.
It arrives in a tall glass. I’d expected it too. I hadn’t expected it to be in such a narrow glass. How is one supposed to get the bits on the bottom?
It appears to be layers of blackberries and cream, with intermittent swipes of chocolate sauce and crushed hazelnuts, doffed with whipped cream.
“Do you like whipped cream?” I ask the Sunny Princess. She shakes her head. I scoop the large swirl onto the saucer.
Alright, now we can approach it. Long-handled spoons at the ready, I scoop in first.
Yup, berries and cream. That’s what we have here and that’s what it tastes like.
The Sunny Princess tries. “I got some nut!”
I dig deep into the glass to find some whole berries rather than the mushy sauce that makes up the greater proportion. They are mildly tart and seem fresh rather than thawed.
The chocolate is not as strong as I’d like. I’m not a huge fan of cream either. This is turning out to be a bit of a disappointment. Also the menu said there’d be waffle! I don’t see any waffle.
“I just ate something mushy, perhaps that was a bit of waffle?” She’s looking doubtful, as am I.
I spy a large chocolate pool at the bottom of the glass. I stir and stir and stir and ultimately we have choc-berry cream. It tastes better this way, but it still just seems like choc-berry cream. Shouldn’t the sum be greater than the parts? Also the tiny bits of nut keep getting lodged in my molars.
It is the sundae that keeps going and going. The Sunny Princess has thrown in the eating utensil, complaining of too much sweetness. But I shall not be defeated by a mere collection of berries with dairy and cocoa!
And I am not. I eat it all. It tastes nice, as you would expect. But it doesn’t taste unusually nice which is what you want in an elaborate dessert. Not enough ingredients I think.
