Honey Spiced Muesli

The reduced-to-clear trolley at Coles: sometimes a treasure trove, sometimes a joke.

Today it is covered with different types of muesli. Check the ‘quick sale’ tag. Wow, $1 reduced from $5! That’s pretty good. And these are all fancy mueslis too.

Where is the best before date? Oh, okay, these are two-weeks after the best before. I thought they couldn’t sell food past the date? I guess that’s just ‘use by’. Anyway, it’s just cereal, not like much can happen to it.

Hmm, which one to choose… whoa-oh, here comes competition… other hands start grabbing at boxes…

Right, this one looks like it’s a bit healthy as well as fancy. Nabbing it before the hands take it away.

Here comes a Coles employee. She pauses, looks at the date on one of the boxes, grimaces, and pushes the trolley away from the horde and out into the back storage. Guess perhaps they aren’t supposed to sell them. Mwhaha, too late!

I pour out the recommended serving size. Look at it. It’s tiny. I double it.

There are whole raw almonds, pepitas, sultanas, little squares of dehydrated apple, oats, seeds, the occasional scrap of apricot and more.

Tastes like honey and cinnamon – though there is more spice than nectar – and when I get a sultana in the spoonful I think of hot cross buns. The apple is a bit chewy at first but it’s softening over time.

Not nearly as much dried fruit as in my regular brand of muesli but the spices keep it tasty. Sometimes a lot of dried fruit can be too strong and heavy in the morning, this is a lighter, gentler flavour.

The toasted oats contrast well with their plain brothers, providing spurts of crunch in the chew-chew-chew that eating muesli always is.

I can see the cinnamon in the milk, and drinking it without any solid bits is the best part.

It was worth $1. But $5? Nah.
