Gin and Tonic

“Want a gin and tonic?”

I’m standing in an off-the-grid hippie home in the middle of the bush and there is now a drink in my hand. The house is an amazing patchwork of recycled building materials and antique furniture and I would be happy to drink to it if only I had some food in my stomach. That still seems to be hours away.

Oh well, surely it’s not very alcoholic!

It was a revelation to me a year ago that I could ask at a bar for something other than what was on the wine and cocktail menu and now I’m about to taste my first g&t! My education is certainly expanding!

I go to take a sip. The bubbles spark up into my eye. It’s an attack drink!

The ice and lime wedges bump together as I make my second attempt. It’s fizzy, a bit too fizzy, but the citrus flavour is pleasant. The whole thing is zesty rather than sweet: finally I am broadening out of lolly water!

Getting used to the fizz… or perhaps it’s dying down. It tastes better and better as I sip it over an hour as the lime concentrates.

I take my last sips watching a storm roll in over the gumtrees. Perhaps I should become a hippie too.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Mix with sparkling water for a delicious soft drink or with gin or vodka and tonic for a cocktail. Antiques
