Check the time as we walk down the hallway. 1.15pm. Lunch is at 1pm sharp, but the other English teacher was talking to us…
Surely there will still be food left…?
Reach the cafeteria and note the lack of people lining up. Not a good sign. I approach the window and look in at the kitchen staff who are sitting down to eat. One gets up and apologetically waves her hands in a ‘no, no’ fashion. She says some things in Mongolian which I gather to be about there being no lunch left.
Oh well. Wander away from the window. One of The Husband’s student comes up to us.
“Oh, teacher, no food for you. No food for me too.”
“Do you have anything to eat?” I ask.
“No, no food left. All gone.”
“No, I mean, do you have a snack in your bag?”
“No.” He sees me looking sad. “But no worry! Am fine!” And he runs off to his next class.
We have some muesli bars I threw into our suitcase back in Australia to eat. Too bad for this guy. This is why I tend to let my students out a minute or two early, so I don’t have to feel like I might have caused them to miss out.
In our office I rummage in the backpack and pull out two muesli bars. The last time I had a Carmen muesli bar it was very filling. Let’s hope it can work as a meal replacement because I have lesson prep to do before we can go home.
Tear the packaging. Smells strongly of cinnamon. The whole thing is a bit squashed from travelling to Beijing and then Ulaanbaatar in the luggage but it seems that it’s supposed to be soft so no damage done.
Looks like oats, seaseme seeds, sultanas, fragments of nuts and random dried fruits.
Bite. Chew.
Sweet. Very sweet. The cinnamon was more of an aroma than an actual taste. The nuts may as well not exist; the flavour is all honey and fruit. A bit cloying.
It is soft and sticky, not in an unpleasant way but definitely no crunch.
It is quite solid, for all that, and filling for a muesli bar. I think I’ll make it til afternoon tea.
