At a glance it looks like a flabby spring roll dropped in water. What are they feeding us now?
Ah, on closer inspection I see the leafy veins running around the squat tube, paler white in a sea of murky-yellow cream. It’s a blanched white cabbage leaf. And the little bit of brown peeking through a gab in the end is mince!
Well, pretty much everything they serve in this cafeteria is mince in some form or another…
The leaf is wrapped quite loosely, not parcelled tightly, so I assume this is a steamed product. It looks so lifeless and sad I expect it’s cold… oh, no, it’s warm after all.
Frankly it doesn’t look like much but a first cabbage roll is a first cabbage roll!
The cabbage is soft and the roll slices into bite-sizes easily. Nice to know it shouldn’t be tough.
Mm! It’s surprisingly good… in that I expected it to be bad. But no, it’s actually quite nice!
The cabbage has the hint of vinegar about it, maybe it’s been pickled. The mince is bold and of better quality than the mutton we often get. The meat’s juices add a splash more moisture, the chopped onion and preserved cabbage the only flavours added.
Tasty even. The cabbage is so perfectly cooked it almost feels like delicate rice paper in the mouth, soft with a little chew.
Of all the ways I’ve been fed mince this month, this could be one of my favourites!
